Scripture: John 4:19-21
The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.”
Thought for the Day: Jesus points to a day when different faith traditions will come together, not in their current expressions of faith, but in some not yet realized common experience. On this day when we could dwell on the differences that separate one religion from another, maybe it is time to look for the God-thing that has yet to be embraced. Let us loosen our grip on blind conceit that is rooted in fear and misunderstanding. I’m not suggesting we stop being Christian (or other faith traditions stop being who they are), but respectful listening, refusing to accept stereotypes of others, and enjoying areas of common witness are some good starting places.
Prayer: Lord, as Jesus called me to love both you and my neighbor, may I be willing to listen and appreciate what is good about those who are different. Amen.
