Scripture: 1 Corinthians 16:13-14
Keep alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.
Thought for the Day: Though I may have some theological disagreements with my Mormon sisters and brothers, there is still something to respect about their understanding of community and their commitment to family. Marjorie Pay Hinckley, one of their leaders, said:
“We are all in this together. We need each other. Oh, how we need each other. Those of us who are old need you who are young, and hopefully, you who are young need some of us who are old…We need deep and satisfying and loyal friendships with each other. These friendships are a necessary source of sustenance. We need to renew our faith every day. We need to lock arms and help build the kingdom so that it will roll forth and fill the whole earth.”
We live in a culture that does not do so well when it comes to being community. We may speak of being in this all together, but we have a tendency to live as if we are flying solo…no responsibilities, no ramification. The beauty of the church is its strong commitment to community. When Paul uses the word “you” in the above passage, and in most of his writings, it is a plural – “you all”. And so when he writes, “Let all that you do be done in love,” he not only is inviting the community to do all things in love, but implying that to do all things in love requires a community.
Prayer: As we prepare to cross the river, O God who leads us, we pray that your Spirit will hold us together as one body so that all we do is done in love. Amen.
