Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 19:5
When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.”

Thought for the Day: Last night, Dr. Joretta Marshall – the Dean from Brite Divinity School, spoke to members of Cypress Creek Christian Church on the topic of forgiveness.  She was brilliant and engaging!  Among the many things that resonated with me was her discussion on hitting rock bottom.  She asked us, “What do you find when you hit rock bottom?”  Our collective answer was, of course, ‘a rock’.  Dr. Marshall then suggested that when we hit rock bottom, we do not need to begin climbing out of the hole immediately.  She suggested that we sit upon the rock, and even pointed out that the rock is usually large enough for someone else to come and sit next to us.  The ministry of presence is powerful, and often those who have hit rock bottom do not need someone to lecture them on why they fell or even give tips on how to climb.  Instead, we need those who are unafraid to join us on the rock for whatever time it takes us to gain some perspective and truly feel ready to move.  Zacchaeus may not have hit rock bottom quite yet, but he would soon find himself there… but not alone.  Jesus is the one who has come to stay with him, and to be present to him.

Prayer: God of life and healing and hope, support me in my sitting and in my waiting.  There are times when I just need to get centered before I can even begin to think of going anywhere.  Amen.
