Scripture: Luke 24:30
When Jesus was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
Thought for the Day: In 1936, the Presbyterian Church started a World Communion Sunday with the idea of people coming together in a spirit of unity around the table. The Federal Council of Churches (a predecessor body of the National Council of Churches) borrowed the idea for its member churches in 1940, including the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Our tradition along with a few others celebrates communion weekly, so there doesn’t appear to be any dramatic difference on this Sunday. Yet if we are mindful of our sisters and brothers throughout the diverse traditions of Christianity who are sharing in this wonderful expression of grace, we are able to see the power of Christ unify us where all human attempts fail. There will always be dramatic differences in style and theology, but instead of finding unity in our likes and dislikes, let us find unity in the Christ who welcomed everyone no matter his/her likes or dislikes.
Prayer: O Lord God, in Jesus Christ you have shown us a way to find commonality even when disagreements remain. Give us the strength to focus on Christ instead of our passionate opinions. Amen.
Join us tomorrow for World Communion Sunday–Cypress Creek Christian Church worships at 9:30am and 11:00am.
