Scripture: 2nd Corinthians 8:7-9
Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you—so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking. I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.
Thought for the Day: Though at times I find the writings of Gary Zukav to be a bit flimsy in the powerful and shifting winds of everyday life, I do like this thought: “The characteristics of an authentically empowered personality are humbleness, clarity, forgiveness and love.” Living one’s life in a spirit of genuineness and authenticity is living life as it was intended to be lived. That’s all there is! To live without authenticity is to live some hallow, insincere and artificial life. That’s not living! In the above scripture, Paul was seeking a love that was genuine, a love like that revealed in the life of Jesus. And though Paul doesn’t come out and say it, I’m guessing he would point us to Jesus as the preeminent example of the authentic life. Some of the characteristics found in that authentic life are the characteristics that Zukav suggested: humbleness, clarity, forgiveness and love. Let’s continue to strive toward preeminent example.
Prayer: I’m a bit anxious, O Magnificent God, in the face of your beautiful examples of love, humility and grace. There are times when I feel a little fraudulent. Forgive me as you always do, and then with the example of Jesus, guide me back into the life you desire for all of humanity to live. Amen.
