Scripture: Daniel 3:1
King Nebuchadnezzar made a golden statue whose height was sixty cubits and whose width was six cubits; he set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.
Thought for the Day: Just a few verses earlier, King Nebuchadnezzar had this marvelous transformation where he turned his life toward the Lord God. You’d think there was no going back, but then we arrive at the beginning of chapter 3 and we find the King back to his old ways. In fact, every chapter in the first half of the book begins this cycle anew. This pattern is a technique the author uses to tell his story, but it is also the human story. Maybe the cyclical aspect of the story is a bit exaggerated, but it makes an important point that is relevant for our own lives. One day we think we’ve got it all figured out, and the next we feel as if we haven’t made it to the starting line. The good news is that God continues to send divine messengers like Daniel who reintroduce us to the transformative grace found within the Holy One.
Prayer: With this new day, O Lord, both my life and the world in which I live are in need of some transformation. Amen.
