Scripture: Isaiah 61:1
The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners…
Thought for the Day: These are the words that Jesus will read during what appears to be his first trip to the synagogue after starting his ministry (Luke 4:18ff). In many ways, Jesus used these words to set the parameters of his ministry, to provide a clear description of his mission and purpose. For the ancient Prophet, these words were spoken during a time of hope and restoration as the people were returning from Exile. Injustice was not only something they had experienced in Exile, it was what they had perpetrated and helped to produce their Exile in the first place. Now the Prophet declares a time when all injustice and suffering will disappear, for as the Prophet will announce later in chapter 61, “For I the Lord love justice…” Jesus’ ministry will become the fullest demonstration of this justice that the Lord loves, and in that demonstration, we see our purpose and mission as those who claim to be apprentices of Jesus. Let the world see in us the conviction that the Lord loves justice.
Prayer: We seek for your spirit, Lord, to move among us and to anoint us for the good work set forth by the prophet and in the life of Jesus. Amen.
