Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Jeremiah 50:4-6
In those days and in that time, says the Lord, the people of Israel shall come, they and the people of Judah together; they shall come weeping as they seek the Lord their God. They shall ask the way to Zion, with faces turned toward it, and they shall come and join themselves to the Lord by an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten. My people have been lost sheep; their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains; from mountain to hill they have gone, they have forgotten their fold.

Thought for the Day: Yesterday, I was very sad to learn that Tom Magliozzi, one of the Click and Clack Brothers from the NPR show, “Car Talk” had died.  This duo of mechanical insight did more than provide helpful information about vehicles.  Tom, and his brother Ray, were hilarious and entertaining.  In a 1997 episode, Tom and Ray were talking with a call in guest who was always getting lost.  They were joking about how guys never want to stop and ask directions.  In looking for an explanation, Tom said, “I tell my wife that I won’t ask [for directions] because I am trying to develop a sense of direction…you will not develop a sense of direction if you are constantly using other people as a crutch.”  Tom, of course, was being funny, but there is this strange human tendency (especially among men) to avoid seeking help on a whole host of issues. In the journey of faith, seeking direction and insight from others is very important. As those who had been in Babylonian captivity (Jeremiah’s audience) for decades and had lost connection with God, it was important for them to “ask the way to Zion” so that “they shall come and join themselves to the Lord”.  With all joking aside, let us be a people who are unafraid to stop and ask directions on our journey to a deeper relationship with God.

Prayer: You desire to be in relationship with me, O Lord, and I am forever thankful that you are persistent in your attempt to bring me close. May my pride never keep me from seeking the help of others in my discovery of you. Amen.
