Scripture: Genesis 17:1-2
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous.”
Thought for the Day: When people discuss or preach on this passage, the focus is usually the miraculous nature of Abram (Abraham) becoming a father at such an old age. That would have, of course, been an important part of Israel’s story as it reinforced the idea that God’s plans may be delayed but never foiled. That’s awesome, but I am equally interested in the idea that no one ever reaches retirement age in the life of faith. At age 99, most people are thinking they can slow down. I have even heard people in their early 60’s say to me, “We’ve worked many years in the life of the church, and it is now time for us to step back and let others do the work.” Much of our culture is focused on retirement, and it bleeds over into the life of faith. But if Abram hadn’t received his AARP Card from the heavenly realm at age 99, I don’t think we should be waiting with bated breath at the mailbox. With that said, I have met many amazing people who have only increased their faithful work once they were able to stop their salaried gig.
Prayer: If you continue to find things for me to do, O Amazing God, then I will do my best in offering what I have to that task. Amen.
