Scripture: Job 15:8-9
Have you listened in the council of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself? What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us?
Thought for the Day: I referenced Bob Hope in my sermon yesterday. Another one of his great quotes is: “You can always tell when a man’s well-informed. His views are pretty much like yours.” In today’s world, we have a lot of people who are impressed by the brilliance of those who agree with them, yet this approach leaves some really important stuff never being addressed. In fact, there is a lot of exceptional science – basically undisputed – that is ignored by a lot of people who keep on reassuring themselves that the science is not true because they keep on saying the science is not true. It would be one thing if there was some actual evidence, but there is not. Eliphaz, one of three friends who confronted Job, was convinced that he had Job and his situation completely figured out. Eliphaz found support in two other people who continued to reinforce his thinking on the subject even though the three of them never went past unsubstantiated assumptions. As people of faith, we need to have the courage to listen to ideas that may challenge the assumptions we and those like us have held, for in doing so, we might actually encounter the truth.
Prayer: Let me listen to your council, Lord, a word of openness to ideas that may challenge and bring discomfort to me. Amen.
