Scripture: Matthew 13:53-56
When Jesus had finished these parables, he left that place. He came to his hometown and began to teach the people in their synagogue, so that they were astounded and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these deeds of power? Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?”
Thought for the Day: I was rereading one of the works of a spiritual mentor, Rev. Bill Nichols. He writes in his book, Day by Day through the New Testament: The Gospels, about the mindset shift that occurs when we begin to realize just how amazing it is that the chosen one of God was an ordinary guy from Galilee. “If that was, indeed, true – that the son of a small-town carpenter could also be the full expression of God – surely never again could one look at any small-town laborer without wondering if God was not present in that life as well. If that big brother in a family of siblings was the Lord of life, never again could one look at anyone’s big brother without a fleeting consideration of the possibility that here was another of God’s disguises” (Chalice Press © 2001, Day 51). In our recognition of Jesus’ humanity, we are more likely to see the divine spark in all of humanity.
Prayer: Gracious God, may my spiritual vision continue to increase in its ability to see the beauty of each person. Amen.
