Happy Advent
Scripture: Isaiah 9:6-7
For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Thought for the Day: Isaiah gives us this lengthy and diverse list of titles associated with the one who is coming. For Isaiah, he was writing in a very specific context and claiming a very specific expectation. The context was nearly eight centuries before Jesus, and it was the prophet calling upon a King to remain faithful to God, trusting in God’s ability over alliances made with foreign powers. How often do we think short-term, willing to sacrifice some key elements of our faith and integrity in hopes of finding some immediate security or happiness? It is difficult to trust in a promise, even when it appears to be coming from one of God’s prophets. We tend to grab for what is certain now over what remains an unfulfilled promise. What’s one thing you could do this Advent season that demonstrates trust in God’s promise as compared to seeking the quick fix that may potentially undermine your faith in the long run? What does it mean to trust in the guidance, strength, vision and shalom of the One described as the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Prayer: As I journey through this Advent season with you, Wonderful Counselor, help me to explore how a stronger relationship with you could lead to a place where I’m more likely to choose your promises over the quick fixes. Amen.
