Scripture: Matthew 17:20
Jesus said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”
Thought for the Day: The disciples had just failed in one of their first solo experiences, and Jesus chastised them a bit. He suggested the even faith the size of the tiny mustard seed could do marvelous things. Of course, the mustard seed was an intriguing example, as the mustard seed produced an annoying weed. It was an invasive and destructive plant. When it was allowed to creep into a garden, it would quickly take over everything. Jesus was using a metaphor to describe discipleship as a pesky and irritating nuisance that, if left untamed, could take over everything. It would grow so swiftly that even mountains would be moved. I don’t think Jesus was speaking literally, but we have all seen how even a small weed in the crack of a great mountain can grow and expand to the point of causing a section of the mountain to break off and start an avalanche. Faithfulness, like that of Jesus, may not seem all that impressive. Think about it–he was a nobody who was born among the poorest, led a rag-tag group of disciples, and eventually died a criminal’s death. Yet his faithfulness has continued to get under the skin of every generation since, and mountains have been moved.

Prayer: God, allow the faithfulness of Jesus to get under my skin, grow like a wild obnoxious weed, and cause even the greatest of obstacles to come tumbling down. Amen.
