Scripture: 2nd Corinthians 9:2 (the Message)
I know you’re on board and ready to go. I’ve been bragging about you all through Macedonia province, telling them, “Achaia province has been ready to go on this since last year.” Your enthusiasm by now has spread to most of them.
Thought for the Day: Yesterday morning I had a breakfast meeting at Champions Golf Club, and there was practically no one else in the restaurant. The person I was meeting, Dan, had invited Jackie Burke to come over to our table if he had time. For those who do not know, Jackie was the co-founder of Champions Golf Club and won 16 PGA events including two majors in 1956. About 20 minutes into our breakfast meeting, this legend in golf came over to our table and sat down. Jackie spent 45 minutes talking about all kinds of things, and along with having an amazing golf history, he is a wealth of insight and wisdom. Among the many things he said to me was the simple statement, “You must view every day as opening day because there is always going to be at least one customer who is coming for the first time.” When Jackie shared that statement, he was clearly sharing wisdom that he had used in his business, but he went on to describe how too many churches have long forgotten their opening day. How might churches look if each day, as the doors were unlock, the members saw it as the opening day for the church? What kind of excitement and expectation would radiate from our lives and into the lives of those who were coming by for the first time? Jackie’s advice has been rattling around in my head all day, and I’m curious how you think the church might look differently if we viewed every day as opening day?
Prayer: Lord God, too often my enthusiasm for faith can ebb and flow, retreat and regrow. I know I can’t spend my life on the mountain top, but I pray that my life is able to continually express a sense of enthusiastic expectation to all those who I meet. Amen.
