Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Ezekiel 34:1-4
The word of the Lord came to me: Mortal, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel: prophesy, and say to them—to the shepherds: Thus says the Lord God: Ah, you shepherds of Israel who have been feeding yourselves! Should not shepherds feed the sheep?  You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the fatlings; but you do not feed the sheep.  You have not strengthened the weak, you have not healed the sick, you have not bound up the injured, you have not brought back the strayed, you have not sought the lost, but with force and harshness you have ruled them.

Thought for the Day: Who are the ones who are truly powerful?  Jesus sure had an opinion on the topic, and I think his humble birth was a reflection of God’s opinion on the subject.  It was Mark Twain who wrote, “Keep away from people who belittle your ambitions.  Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”  He was right, though those who appear to have the power (the shepherds of Israel) sensed the possibility that their power might be threatened.  In response – a response based in fear – they kept everyone in a weakened state.  They will try to hide the fact through intimidation, but these are the ones who Mark Twain would like describe as “small people”.   I believe I am where I am because so many people cared about my success, and with no sense of insecurity, they encouraged me and lifted me up… these were not small people whatsoever.  At times, their humble acts allowed me to receive all the accolades and honor.  Yet these folks were the ones who were truly strong, courageous and powerful.

Prayer: Strong and Encouraging God, I turn to you when I feel threatened and my insecurities desire to speak out of turn.  I turn to you, Mighty One, in the belief that you, through the gift of the baby Jesus, can teach me the truth of real power that is found in humble service to others.  Amen.
