Ecclesiological Etchings: 12-14-12

Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Micah 3:5
Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who lead my people astray, who cry “Peace” when they have something to eat, but declare war against those who put nothing into their mouths.

Thought for the Day: In Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, I am struck by the words, “And in despair I bow’d my head: ‘There is no peace on earth,’ I said, ‘For hate is strong, and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men.’”   Longfellow, like the ancient prophets, understood the ease by which people can speak the word of peace, but the difficulty in actually living it in tough times.  The season of Advent confronts the church with the radical nature of peace.  It is not the absence of violence, but a transformed existence for everyone.

Prayer: May my heart know the beauty of your peace, O God, so that everything I do embodies its meaning.  Amen.
