Scripture: John 1:9
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
Thought: Just a few hours ago, a tragedy beyond description struck an elementary school in Connecticut. Like many of you, I am weeping for the mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, friends and colleagues, who are hearing news that is simply unimaginable. There is no question it is time for us to have a serious conversation about violence in this country, and it needs to be led, in part, by religious leaders and others who bring faith to the dialogue. But today, we must become the light that shines in this deep darkness.
Most of us won’t have any direct contact with those who grieve this day, but it is time for us to let the hope and peace shine brighter than ever. We need to speak a word grace, extend a smile toward a stranger, and offer a hug to someone who is visibly lost. It is time for us be the light we claim to follow. Our world needs a witness so radically different than the images we are seeing on TV this day, and I’m sure there are many who are very capable of being that witness, but followers of Jesus Christ know without question what our witness is.
Prayer: O Light of the World, we need the warmth of your presence to envelop us in this time of great sadness. Call each of us to illuminate our own small part of the world. We need your transformative grace, and so in this time when we welcome anew the gift of the Christ Child, shine upon us so we have the ability to shine this needed gift upon others. Amen.
I will be at the Cypress Creek Christian Church Chapel from 2:00-5:30pm if you would like to stop by for prayer.
