Scripture: Proverb 11:14Where there is no guidance, a nation falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. Thought for the Day: Proverbs are simple and to the point, and so I do not wish to give lengthy deliberation to these words. As I think about these thoughts, I ask myself: Where do I receive guidance and counsel? Do I seek out the advice of those
Scripture: Matthew 8:19 A scribe then approached and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Thought for the Day: Epictetus, the Greek philosopher, was thought to have said, “Imagine for yourself a character, a model personality, whose example you determine to follow, in private as well as in public.” I think Epictetus might have been on to something here, and like the scribe in the scripture,
A Simple Thought About A Simple Man: Today would have been the 100th birthday of Clarence Jordan, one of the most inspirational people to have walked on this earth. Clarence was a farmer with a Ph.D. in New Testament Greek, not a usual combination. He used both of those skills to help start Koinonia Farms outside of Americus, Georgia in 1942. Koinonia is the Greek word for community,
Scripture: Psalm 138:7-8 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me. The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. Thought for the Day: Purpose and love are inherently one. Scripture: Psalm 82:4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. Thought for the Day: There are those things that might trouble us, but we can ignore them in hopes that they will go away. Scripture: James 5:9 Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! Thought for the Day: Short and to the point… Before judging someone else, recognize that the only real difference is that you may have honed your skills at concealing your sin better than the person you are about ready to judge. Prayer: You
Scripture: James 1:2-4 My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing. Thought for the Day: If I see another commercial for a weight loss program that claims you don’t have to do
Scripture: Psalm 18:6 In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears. Thought for the Day: I remember using this Psalm with a class of young children. A week later one of the children brought me a picture based upon her reflections. It depicted a rather generic
Scripture: Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. Thought for the Day: A lot of lip service is given to putting God first, yet making God and the ways of God the pivotal truth in one’s life takes extraordinary
