Scripture: Romans 12:13Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Thought for the Day: I hope no one takes this personally, but I never thought I call myself a Texan. And maybe simply having a Texas driver’s license doesn’t actually make me a Texan, but a few months ago, I was a legal resident of Florida. A few years before that, a legal resident of
Scripture: Psalm 3:3 Many are saying to me, “There is no help for you in God.” Thought for the Day: There are many books on the market today attempting to prove the existence of God or demonstrate a rational case for the truth of Christ. I find such books to be useless if not downright damaging to Christianity. Some of the logic in these books goes like this:
Scripture: John 7:37-38 On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” Thought for the Day: Yesterday at our staff meeting, Cory (our sound and lighting
Scripture: 2nd Samuel 6:16 As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal daughter of Saul looked out of the window, and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart. Thought for the Day: I was never much of a dancer, but I loved to get out on the dance floor and have a good time.
Scripture: Psalm 95:6 O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! Thought for the Day: Yesterday, a tragedy occurred in a suburb of Milwaukee. A gunman entered a house of worship, opened fire, and killed six people. We do not know what precipitated this attack, but any violence committed toward a specific expression of faith should be seen as an
Scripture: Romans 3:23-24 …since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by God’s grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, Thought for the Day: I have always appreciated the words of the 17th century English clergyman, Thomas Fuller, who wrote: “He that cannot forgive others breaks the bridge over which he must pass himself; for
Scripture: Hebrews 8:12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.” Thought for the Day: Is God’s memory really that bad? Is God able to forget what has occurred? We often say, “Forgive and forget,” but in most situations, we don’t really forget. Instead, those who are willing to do the hard work of forgiveness, move to a place where
Scripture: Philippians 3:20 Our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ Thought for the Day: About 14 years ago, I had the privilege of witnessing a swearing-in ceremony for a young woman receiving American citizenship. I consider myself a fairly patriotic person, but I cannot remember another time when I was moved with such patriotic pride
Scripture: John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Thought for the Day: A wonderful book review at the men’s prayer meeting yesterday morning got me to thinking about the single best known passage in the Christian Scriptures. Two words standout–believe and eternal. Marcus Borg and other
Scripture: Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Thought for the Day: We always like watching the underdog pull out the victory. Just the other day I was watching the Olympics, and in a matter minutes, I witnessed three separate underdogs claim victory in two separate sports. Jesus seemed to take a special liking to the underdogs of life. To the meek, he
